Etta James embroiled in illness, legal woes

Etta James, who is fighting both dementia and leukemia, now has one more hardship to bear. Her husband of 41 years is seeking control of her finances.

In February 2008, James gave power of attorney to her sons Donto and Sametto James, and Donto’s wife Christy. Her husband doesn’t believe that the power of attorney was done legally, which is what spurred the claim.

Last week, a judge granted her husband the use of $60,000 to pay for Etta’s care expenses, though the remainder of $1 million is still in her son’s name.

Etta James, now 72, is best known for the 1961 song “At Last.” Check back for more Etta James updates.

Etta James hospitalized for infection

Singer Etta James has been hospitalized in Los Angeles with an infection stemming from a urinary tract infection, according to one of her sons, Donto James.


Donto also leaked that his 71-year-old mother has been suffering with Alzheimer’s and was hospitalized for it last year.


“Right now she is very confused,” Donto said, adding that her comments about Beyonce singing the song “At Last” at President Obama’s Inaugural Ball were due to “drug-induced dementia” from medications she was taking for a back injury.
